Step back into time with Reese and Jeanne Moore and family as we present
a
"hands on" living history program of the Timucuan Indians. The
Timucuan
Indians were here when the early explorers landed. We actually set up a
Timucuan village, and our presentation allows the children and adults of
Florida
to have a hands-on experience of life 300-4000 years ago in our living
village.
We exhibit lodging, dug-out canoes, totems, skins, bones and tools. We
show how bones, gourds, and shells were made into tools, dishes,
jewelry, and
even toys. We demonstrate how arrowheads were made and used, and we show
different tools which were used to cultivate the land. We teach how
fires
were started and how holes were drilled into wood and shells.
The Timucuan were hunters, gathers, and agriculturalists; therefore, we
display a large variety of grains, native beans, vegetables, fruits,
herbs, and indigenous edible plants. We do use the fire pit with the
smoke rack
to cook fish and meat to show the preservation of food versus
refrigeration.
We dress in leathers and skins and display the moss the Timucuan's wore.
Over fifty years of research went into the preparation of our program
and
all implements used are replicas or artifacts found in archeological
digs
done here in Florida. Our goal is to focus on re-creating the period and
lifestyle of the "real" Florida Indians so people will
understand that
there was life before the Seminole Indians.
We have a permanent village built in Orange City and would like to have
children come and visit the village there as it is much more extensive
and
detailed than what we can provide on a mobile basis. Travel can be
discussed
for a mobile village as well. We like to allow more time for your
children
to experience the excitement of our program. Fees vary according to
distanceof travel.
